A search for the term “schlonged” on MarketWatch yields exactly zero results. Till now, anyway. On the Wall Street Journal, there are just two matches — both from this week. On Twitter, however, the “schlonged” fountain overflows.
Maybe Donald Trump was right all along. It’s not just the Yiddish word for penis; it’s also a common means of expressing the notion that one has been “beaten badly.” Not rude at all.
The whole thing started on Monday night at a Trump campaign stop in Grand Rapids, Mich.:
Of course, the media loves to jump on all things Trump, and this certainly was no exception. The headlines started to stack up: “Trump launches vulgar attack against Hillary Clinton,” trumpeted NBC News. “Thanks for ruining Christmas, Donald Trump,” complained the Washington Post.
By Tuesday morning, as you can see from this spike in Google searches, America just had to know more about this “schlonged” firestorm. Trump defended himself on Twitter, as he often does:
Twitter then stepped up to show that, maybe, the term has been given a naughty rap it doesn’t fully deserve. Rather, it’s a word for many occasions. Soon, the#ReplaceAWordWithSchlong hashtag was born. By Tuesday night, it had topped the trending list.
