That's not generally a problem. If I touch one, it's a mistake.

I came close to grabbing one in the pole beans a couple of summers ago. I was picking the beans and saw something black, didn't think anything of it until I looked back down and it wasn't there any more. I started looking for it, and it was a little garter snake. I paid attention to where I was reaching after that. They aren't poisonous, but neither is a dog, and I don't want to be bit by one of those either.
