I don't think the down payment plays as big of a role as many think. You have always has FHA 3 percent. VA 0 percent, FHMA 0 percent without problems. It was the income,job iand inflated appraisals. The auto went through the same thing in the 90s. The only auto subprime companies to survive were the ones that stuck to strict verification policies.
