Implant infections are apparently a big problem. I have heard two horror stories recently. The first involved infection around a knee implant. They ended up removing the implant. He's still alive and I assume that he will get another knee implant at some point.

The other horror story was a 74 year old man in very good health for his age. He had some back problems that were NOT pressing but his doctors said that he would need some kind of implant probably within 5 years. Given his age and current good health the doctors advised that he go ahead and get the implant now. He got infection around the implant and when drugs didn't work, they did major surgery to clean around the implant. Nothing worked. He was dead in a matter of weeks.
