Great News for LEU: Nuclear Matters Welcomes NRC’s Renewal of Davis-Besse License

December 09, 2015 05:54 PM Eastern Standard Time

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Below is a statement from Nuclear Matters on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s approval of a 20-year license renewal for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio.

“This is extremely welcome news for Ohio. Davis-Besse, like other existing nuclear plants across the country, provides a steady stream of reliable, carbon-free electricity that is critical to the state’s energy mix. In fact, Ohio’s nuclear plants, including Davis-Besse, produce 12.1 percent of the state’s electricity, but account for 91 percent of its carbon-free generation. Especially at a time when we are working towards reducing carbon emissions, keeping our existing nuclear plants – like Davis-Besse – open and operating for the duration of their useful lifespan is a common sense part of the solution, as was noted during a discussion at the Davis-Besse plant this past February.

“According to a report released earlier this year by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), Davis-Besse generates $1.1 billion in average annual economic output in the state of Ohio, and is expected to generate nearly $30 billion in economic output for the state through 2037. Not only does the plant employ roughly 700 people in well-paid positions, it also stimulates nearly 4,600 additional jobs throughout Ohio. What’s more, Davis-Besse’s operation prevents the release of 7.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, which is about the same amount of carbon dioxide released by over 1.4 million cars. Additionally, a recent report from the Brattle Group, an economic consulting firm, found that together, Ohio’s two nuclear plants provide nearly $17 million in net state tax revenues annually. Clearly, it is good news for Ohio consumers and businesses that they will be able to continue to reap these benefits.”
