From what I have been able to gather, standard silk costs less than $50 per kilo to manufacture from an established sericulture facility, so why the discrepancy?

You are right. The wholesale price of good silk is about 50 a kilo and as low as $10 a kilo.

It isnt a stretch at all to use these as KBLBs cost numbers. But to answer why Kim wouldn't say so.... Why would you tell the world you can produce for $10 a kilo and try to ask $200 a kilo for it?
Kim needs a base price to start the high tech silk market price.
He should keep the costs at 150 a kilo in the public view. It gives people like spiber a false sense of security to set their goals at $100 a kilo when the target they need to shoot for is $10 if they want to compete.

That's also why they need spider strength silk and not just silk with spider dna in it. Why would anyone use a synthetic silk that is inferior to mundane silk at 10x the price?

KBKB can produce silk at the same price as mundane silk and as strong as spider silk. That's worth 10x the price of mundane silk
