SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - Oracle said Thursday that it plans to nearly double its work force in India to 6,000, making that country the software maker's largest research center outside of California's Silicon Valley.
Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle (ORCL: news, chart, profile) , which is now hiring about 100 employees in India every month, said many of the new workers will fill a campus planned next year at a seven-acre site in Hyderabad. Oracle already has two development centers in India - one in Hyderabad and another in Banaglore.
"I know that globalization is controversial in some spots in the world," Ellison said via satellite to a group that included government officials in Delhi. "People protest it regularly. Yet (it's) remarkable that right now Oracle employs about 3,200 people in India, paying constantly increasing salaries, providing a very high standard of living, and helping to create the new middle class in India."
