Rumsfeld Doubles Estimate for Cost of Troops in Iraq
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/10/international/worldspecial/10MILI.html?th

$3.9 Billion a month x 12 months = $46.8 Billion a year to rule Iraq

Of course back here in the U.S. we have no additional money for homeland security emergency response teams, not enough money to beef up security in our ports, not enough money to ... (fill in the blanks however you like)

p.s. something about that $3.9 figure ... hmmm. Surprised it wasn't listed as $3.99 billion. I'll bet the "real" figure turns out to be well north of $50 Billion a year. Swell.

p.p.s. that $50 Billion a year does NOT include ANY of the costs of reconstruction.

p.p.p.s. nor does it include the $900-$950/mo. for "operations" (whoops, there's another $10+ Billion added to the tab).

p.p.p.p.s. I'm sure it comes as a big shock (not!) to find that Rumsfeld "discovered" that he'd been providing Congress with numbers half what the truth is, only after a thorough grilling before a Congressional Committee. Yep, went back and re-checked the numbers in a break during testimony and ... suddenly "discovered" the real numbers.

p.p.p.p.p.s. SCUM. Lying scum. (sorry, but I'm pissed)
