Laser and EBM patents and searches

mauser96 and Nobahamas (and everyone else), thanks for your input.

mauser96, I've done a bunch of patent searches under the Arcam name. Can you tell us what some of the best online tools are that you've used?

I've used these among others with greater or lesser success:
USPTO Patent Application Full-Text and Image Database (AppFT)
"Google Patents" search for Arcam

Nobahamas may have been asking "What's to stop GE / Siemens / DMG Mori Seiki etc. (or Arcam) from making their own LASER machines?" If not, I see that as a good question. I've heard that the laser technology is more open (available) but don't know what, if any, limitations there are.

I don't have any real understanding on how patents legally (i.e. exact protection terms) protect inventors and manufacturers.

Is the following legal?
MetalicaRap is an open 3D metal & home solar cell printer, based on the principles of electron beam welding and vapor deposition. MetalicaRap is currently in the design stage.
I've also seen a small group in Australia trying to commercialize their own EBM machine within the past year. I'll look for more information and post it if I find it again.


I'll check into this website. It looks reasonably decent. If anyone has any good suggestions or explanations, please post them.
