When a public company sells shares for cash, how is that done?

Is it done via a trading platform or can Ron Mills swing by my office and we exchange cash for shares? Does the exchange of shares for cash reflect on the number of shares traded daily as shown on any public exchange?

I am sorry if the answer is obvious, I am a bit of a novice.
