Monroe1, it's really true. I saw it on crash investigations where they did an evacuation of plane on fire. British Airtours (I think). Anyway, investigators learned what you posted about the fumes and developed smoke hoods.

They are actually already on board some airplanes and they are located in the galley inside the upper cabinet for the flight crew's use. They're black hoods with a silver circle in the front center made from some sort of mesh and other items to do whatever they're supposed to do.

In this particular evacuation the crew must have forgot the hoods were in the upper cabinet in the galley. I'm giving exact location for us..lol. Now we know where they are located.
