Supporting the ARM ecosystem by giving up Atom and building ARM chips on its superior processes is not the way to do that as the competitors will then price-target Core having got ridden of Atom.



Here's the way I see it...

Intel isn't going to gain material share with its x86 chips because Intel doesn't exactly put its best foot forward there, right? Intel is putting its "C" team against the "A" teams within the mobile industry.

So if these ARM chips are going to be sold anyway, why shouldn't they be Intel-designed ARM Chips putting money in Intel's coffers rather than TSMC's?

p.s. Spreadtrum's CEO seems to think very lowly of Atom:

Li thinks Spreadtrum can work with Intel to customize IA for power improvements. “Intel could fine tune it, and optimize it” for the mobile market. But that may be “three years from now,” Li said.

Working with Intel, he sees three things going for Spreadtrum. “The access to Intel’s foundry, strong IP, and Intel is the only processor architecture company that has its own foundry.”
