The Vets deserve all the credit they receive for their sacrifices for our country, but the families of Vets should be given just as much credit as they sacrifice as much in a different way.

My father was a career Naval Aviator, starting in WWII flying a torpedo bomber (Avenger) off a jeep carrier, then becoming a fighter pilot and ultimately commanding a squadron of F4's (Phantom). Further service during Vietnam as program mgr for both the F4 and F8 (Crusader)and then Ops Officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany.

Dad gave his all for our country, but he always said that Mom was his co-pilot and greatest wingman, for without her to handle the family (6 kids) he would never have been able to pursue his dream of being a pilot. I know Mom suffered long and lonely months while Dad was at sea, always knowing he was at risk even in times of peace as carrier operations are inherently dangerous.

I take my hat off to all the brave wives and mothers of our Vets and want to let them know that all of us who were Vets know and appreciate the sacrifices they also made for our country.

Mom will be buried with Dad at the Natl Cemetery in Dallas and that is rightfully so as I believe she has earned it just as certainly as Dad earned the right.
