SOFCs have been around for decades. The part of the Rubicon that is proprietary is the many fuel sources it can use and the efficiency at which it utilizes that. The only thing that sets SOFCs apart from others is the material that the plates which are the heart of the system are made of, their size and how efficient they are. From my understanding Rubicon is designed to use different fuel mediums "out of the box" unlike others that are only designed to run on natural gas (like BloomBox) vs biogas, waste produced methane, ethanol etc.
