Question regarding trials or collaborations where the Big Pharma gives the company running the trial upfront money. Do those companies that receive upfront money have to pay for the drug used in the trial?

My point if that is the case, didn't AZN just technically give PPHM some upfront money, or does that upfront money have conditions as well tied in, percentage of profits etc.

I understand this may have many parts but really just curious about weather the company receiving the upfront money usually has to buy the drug used in the trial.
