Drug testing in a criminal justice setting can be challenging with traditional urine testing programs. Matching the gender of the client and test administrator, shy bladder excuses, and drug test cheating are just a few of the issues associated with urine drug testing. Recently, the federal government issued proposed guidelines for lab-based oral fluid testing. Among the reasons the feds gave for offering an alternative testing method after decades of only permitting urine testing included the ease of which oral fluid collections take place, the elimination of shy bladder issues, and the significant reduction in successful drug test cheating efforts.

Mr. Current is the former Executive Director of the American Council for Drug Education and served as Vice President of Consulting for a national third-party administrator of drug testing and background screening services.
