Which is it again? Is it "nearly" 50% he sold, or "most" of his shares he sold? Nearly 50% is less than 50%. MOST is way more than 50%.

Is the man not entitled to sell assets if he needs cash?

How many shares of preferred stock does he own at what value, and how many shares of common stock at what value.

Call him up and ask him why he needed ready cash. None of anyone else's business of course, and I doubt he will say why.
