Comb, my wild guess will be that AMD decided that A64 must have the best possible memory interface in order to compete. So I think new socket supports the dual-channel DDR II and has a lot of new ground and power pins to power it well.

If the old socket was already supporting dual-DDR-II than I ran out of new ideas :)
