Google has invested a huge amount of time and energy to the auto pilot program. Starting early with their mapping and still have cars running around measuring everything.
They will get the contact at some point, with or without "using their technology" just a matter of how much time and money they will have to invest in it when EPGL / COO are already to help but would prefer to use their own technology that they have already tested and proven in COO's lab tests.
