DR /Rich / others with WCDMA IPR insight-

1. It’s a known fact that NOK and other GSM incumbents attempted to design around Qualcomm IPR when developing the WCDMA standard before realizing that was an impossibility and agreeing to Qualcomm’s licensing terms.

2. No doubt some of the above IPR was unnecessary and perhaps even counter productive, resulting in corrective IPR achieve a workable product.

3. It’s also been speculated that such actions significantly delayed WCDMA development / commercialization.

4. It’s also been speculated with their dominance in GSM, it was in NOK’s ( and other GSM incumbents)interest to keep GSM handset production growing as long as possible, thus providing incentive for delaying WCDMA’s arrival.

Does anyone have any detail (links) supporting the above and the magnitude of such ?

TIA- jim
