I wrote to Ideal's IR a while ago about SolarEdge (after the announcement that Tesla chose them for it's PowerWall solution), and here is some of what they replied:


[SolarEdge's] 20 kW product is a uni-directional solar inverter, fixed voltage DC to AC conversion only without isolation similar to many other solar inverters except it can also take inputs from panel optimizers. IPWR is a bi-directional unit (DC to AC and AC to DC) with isolation. A completely different offering altogether.

We most likely will enter residential when there is sufficient momentum and it makes sense. Residential will be in the 3kw to 10kw range. When and if we release a unit in this vertical we would certainly want to go after the big fish.

The [market] for inverters for solar a terribly competitive space we don't want to compete in.
