They tried to steal the patents apparently, so they know it's a profitable thing to own. Thing is they can't use them because they got caught and were sued and RMTD won, from what I understand to be in the filings. Since T bought RMTD, ATT is now has "partnered up" with T in order to not only allow T a better network but also for ATT to use the patents, I assume. Some agreements could have been made for future ownership of T via RM with RMTD, in my opinion. Therefore, ATT may potentially own shares of RMTD, via future RM with T.


But you took my hypothetical situation too literally as it was hopeful jester. Though if it were going to happen, that's how I think it would go.
