I'll break in here Beth and offer the following which is common knowledge, but most importantly, derived from my direct experience with web design, HTML and FTP:
When new content goes onto a given page, FTP "overwrites" the old content. It is instantaneous.
There is absolutely no need for a page or a site to be down while changing or updating content.
We all see something similar when we edit our posts. The post doesn't disappear for a period while we update. The "submit" button overwrites the old in a moment.
There is another reason for the MDMN content being gone. Now that's a subject ripe for speculation..
