they sold lots of shares in 2014 (at $5.25 or higher) and have over $100m in the banks o not sure why this is a share deal.

May be because the seller (Air LIquide) will not sell them into the market and want to benefit from the bigger PLUG. I hope they are locked in some what as AL had been selling their other shares in PLUG recently (they bailed them out years ago) perhaps they saw the mistake.
