June 6 - Xechem sickle-cell treatment gets orphan status

Xechem International, Inc. (XKEM.OB) said on Tuesday it had received orphan drug status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a compound known as 5-HMF for treating patients suffering from sickle cell disease.

Orphan drug status entitles a company to various incentives, including seven years of marketing exclusivity for a designated treatment once the FDA approves it.
