Or do like I did and build it anyway. I needed a two car garage 30 years ago and where I wanted it was about 5 feet from a cottonwood tree.
I figured, what the hell, the tree probably has another 60-70 years left and by then it won't matter to me so I built it anyway. Traditional 2 by 4 lumber.
I find myself trimming the bark off the eve every now and then but the tree does provide fantastic shade.
