btw, I am not surprised. when personal gains,whether fame or money, are involved , these things will proliferate.
What is disappointing for me is that scientific fraud/misconduct seems to be so prevalent in the US when I expect it to be more common in places like china as per the discussion of chinese stock mkt lack of transparency.
I recently finished Bad Pharma by Ben Goldacre, a British physician, academic and science writer. It was hard going for me,not because of the difficulty of the content, far from it , I learned a lot about the world of academic and scientific publication for a layman, but because it is so damned depressing.
