Do you plan to harvest the honey?

Traditionally commercial or hobby hives are made up of supers with frames seeded with a bees wax comb.

Depending on the kind of winters you have (I had hives in Ohio when I was a teenager) two supers are for the queen and bees. An excluder (which keeps the queen sequestered below) is placed between the two supers for the queen and bees and the supers you plan to harvest. This ensures that eggs are not laid be the queen in the supers you plan to harvest for honey.

Remember to remove the supers you plan to harvest and the excluder in the fall.

Since it has been about 40 years since I have kept bees, here is a link to a Honey Bee forum: www.beesource.com
