First, Elmer, very convenient of you to use Jerry's word as evidence when it fits your point (you generally don't trust what he says). I don't trust what Jerry says (then again, I don't trust what any high management says, there is too much incentive to lie in all companies). So I don't give weight to what Jerry said for public consumption at that time. Actually, it was a rather meaningless statement because it is a tautology that a company does not have infinite resources so they can not afford to be burdened by products that are not being bought forever. Like most such statements, it was a lie by inference, not one that could be contradicted in court.

I think that greg_s was on the mark when he pointed out the HP Laserjet design loss to Intel. That is what I remember from the time. AMD did not have any significant customers for the 29K so they had little choice but to cancel it.

Yes, that does mean that Intel outcompeted AMD in the embedded controller market in the late 1980s.
