The fundamental problem with this argument is that financial success in the past does not ordain future success. If so, then Enron would still be in business. Alas, like Purdue, they too had their ethical mishaps. Further, as we know from a quick look at the cell phone industry, success and industry leadership once held firmly in the hands of a giant company - Motorola - was not a ticket to future success. As the Motorola story shows vividly, arrogance and discounting one's competitors is a compound mistake. Will Purdue survive their arrogance? Who can say. It depends on the humble thinking of their new CEO. He came from Merck and the general thinking is that he will either acquire needed tech to augment their current issues with their current abuse deterrence or they will set themselves up for sale. In which case, the family will only get richer. (As if that matters to Elite shareholders.)
