Just a day after performing a relatively sedate version of ?Hound Dog? on the nationally televised Steve Allen Show, Elvis Presley records the song in New York. It?s done in 31 takes. The tune was originally an R&B hit for Willie Mae (Big Mama) Thornton. ?Don?t Be Cruel,? Elvis? biggest ?50's hit, is also recorded. It?s Presley's first session with the Jordanaires providing backing vocals. 1956
1940's Roy Britten, of Bruce Springsteen?s E Street Band, is born. 1949

1950's Johnny Colla, a founding member of Huey Lewis & The News, has a birthday. The guitarist/sax player starts life in Sacramento, CA. 1952

?King Creole,? one of Elvis Presley?s better movies, opens. 1959
1960's

Jimi Hendrix is discharged from the army. The original story claims Jimi broke his ankle on a parachute jump. However, evidence suggests Hendrix faked being gay to get out. It was the very same ploy Doors singer Jim Morrison used a few years later to avoid the draft. 1962

Bush?s Dave Parsons has a birthday. 1965

Bassist Noel Redding quits the Jimi Hendrix Experience to form his own group, Fat Mattress. The group goes nowhere. 1969

David Bowie?s ?Young Americans? LP featuring the title track and ?Fame? goes gold. 1975

1980's It?s a riotous day. Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart are charge with interfering with drug related arrests at the San Diego Sports Arena though the official charge is ?suspicion of inciting a riot.? Sounds cooler, doesn?t it. 1980

Bruce Springsteen plays the first Rock show in Jersey?s Brendan Bryne Meadowlands Arena. There are six sold out shows. 1981

1990's A fan videotaping a Guns ?N? Roses concert is enough to cause Axl Rose to leap from the stage and attack the fan. A riot results trashing the venue outside of St. Louis. Sixty people are hurt. 1991

Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland enters a no-contest plea in L.A. to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence. The count stems from an incident the previous October, where the singer crashed his vehicle into a parked van. 2004

Staind, Shinedown and Powerman 5000 are on a DVD chronicling the 2003 Locobazooka! Festival in Fitchburg, MA. Money raised goes to "Homes For Our Troops," a nonprofit group that constructs modified homes for disabled veterans. 2004

Viva Lost Wages. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Weezer headline a free concert in Las Vegas to celebrate the Sin City's centennial. Vegas Rocks 100 takes place on soccer fields next to Sam Boyd Stadium. It was moved from the Strip due to concerns about heat and overcrowding. 2005

The Live 8 concerts take place. Green Day and Audioslave play Berlin while U2, Velvet Revolver and R.E.M. appear in London. On the other side of the pond, Linkin Park and Bon Jovi perform in Philadelphia as Motley Crue and Jet hit the stage in Barrie, north of Toronto. Elton John is among the artists who perform in London at a EuroPride Day concert called The Show. The event is part of the city's gay-pride festivities.
