According to Coates's web page, the extended life of the oil in the lower crankcase assembly, is due to it, not having to cool the upper assembly. It is the extremely harsh conditions present in the upper poppet valve assembly that scald the oil, thus lowering the oils effective lifespan. Which begs the question. How is the upper assembly cooled?
