Combination of things (scams, toxic financing, etc). Main thing is that all were highly over-valued due to the marijuana hype at the time. The top penny MJ stocks were only pulling several millions in revenue annually, yet their market cap was in the hundreds of millions and in some cases close to a billion. Some had annual revenue that was in the hundreds of thousands or less($0), and they had market caps in the hundreds of millions. IMO, that was the biggest red flag that these stocks would correct themselves eventually. It was a question of "when".
