The only real "long term testing" has been done by COTE. Like any product, it has seen a long list of failures and improvements in R&D, and some in the field. Like any product, once it hits market on a larger scale, it will take all types of use and misuse for "long term reliability" to show itself, including revisions, updates that come with any automotive/engine design.
Why would you be worried now? Why would you invest and now be worried about long-term testing? It's a part of the risk/reward, at this ridiculously low price.
As far as reverse-engineering by the Chinese, the extensiveness of the patents is all anybody can fall back on, beyond that, you can start being worried about reverse-engineering by any company that purchases the product, or/including parts-makers like Cummins. Reverse-engineering is usually a sign of a viable product to begin with :).
