The Mountain Pine Beetle Program supported the exploration of alternative means to mitigate the economic impact of the beetle epidemic. Issues specific to using timber affected by mountain pine beetle (MPB) were identified, and strategies were developed that allowed the forest sector to use post-MPBfibre and continue to sell products into established product markets.
The program invested in research and development of methods to use salvaged timber in traditional manufacturing mills and product markets. Research was completed on post-beetle timber shelf-life, timber salvage impacts and options, tall oil recovery, panelboard manufacturing, impacts on pulp and paper processes, bioenergy, and impacts on future timber supplies.
Research projects funded under this objective of the Mountain Pine Beetle Program included exploration of alternate fibre use and ecological impacts. The results of this research are available in the Canadian Forest Service Publications database.
