Arvegenix is a company working to develop new crop traits, focusing on and specializing in a plant variety called pennycress. Pennycress is an oil-seed crop and also has the interesting property of growing well in winter, allowing Mid-Western farmers to now earn income during what has traditionally been one of the hardest parts of the year.
It’s been estimated that pennycress production can unlock an extra $75-$100/acre of value for farmers. Growing pennycress can also serve to act as a form of cover cropping, which can help protect the quality of the soil and fields, primarily with respect to moisture and nutrient retention.
The main application of for harvested pennycress is as an input in the production of biofuels, aviation fuels and livestock feed.
Arvegenix has raised $2.6 million in capital to date and has received investments from Biogenerator, Yield Lab, St. Louis Arch Angels and Cultivation Capital, among others.
