Reminds me of my ex-wife's father. When Sam Walton was just getting started with WalMart, he was looking for initial investors at $5K a pop. My ex's father, who owned a few small retail stores himself, was offered a participation in Sam's venture but turned it down. By his own admission, "Turning Sam down was the worst mistake I ever made."
