Whiting Petroleum (NYSE:WLL) plans to keep 11 drilling rigs operating through 2016 but it would begin to add rigs if crude prices rose to $70/bbl, CEO Jim Volker said in recent earnings conference call.

The comments were among the most definitive yet from a leader of a major crude oil producer on the threshold needed to start fresh drilling and curb recent pullbacks that have rocked the oil sector.
