Certain tasks and sub-tasks that are redundant can be programmed into a true modern surgical robot. For example, tying a knot. Instrument tracking is a form of automation and has been shown in early videos of the early SPORT prototypes (before it was SPORT). Basically there are certain tasks that require no thinking by the surgeon. These tasks can be automated robotically. I don't think when I'm tying a knot.
