Official: Chevrolet Colorado High Country Announced for U.S.

Denver Will Be Launch Market, Extensive Use of Hemp-Based Materials

Chevrolet chose the symbolic date of April 20 to officially announce the debut of the Colorado High Country for the U.S. market. The Colorado High Country was previously announced for Asian and global markets, but we initially predicted it would not be coming to the U.S. on the grounds of the double-entendre of its designation in light of the recent legalization of recreational marijuana in the Rocky Mountain state. However, evidently Chevrolet sees things differently.

In a release announcing the new model, Chevrolet stated, “Considering the shift in generational attitudes about the recreational use of cannabis products and our desire to appeal to a younger demographic with the Colorado, we thought we should embrace this societal change with a model that cannabis enthusiasts can call their own.” The High Country also represents the first use of hemp-based renewables in the Colorado, including seat-fill material, door trim, and floormats, although GM has certified that all hemp-based material used in the Colorado High Country is THC-free, tacitly discouraging any smoking of trim pieces.

The Colorado High Country will launch first in the Denver and Colorado Springs metropolitan areas, with a special marketing emphasis in the Boulder area, the home of the University of Colorado, where Chevrolet expects to have an especially enthusiastic reception for the model. Coinciding with the model’s official launch later this spring, a special limited-edition Sativa Green color will be offered exclusively on the High Country, with only 420 units featuring the color being offered for the 2015 model year.
