WMBW, You asked Can you please explain what you mean by this? in response to "Once market share is gone, it is gone".

If you can get somebody to try something that's half the battle.

The whole chip manufacturing biz is about learning to make chips. Every chip you make that has any functionality should be put in a customers hand, IMO.

In the late quarters of '02, IIRC, a statement was made out of AMD that INTC "gave" a buyer in China a lot of chips out of "old inventory". A derisory statement. Foolish, IMO. Every chip you make that has any potential should be put in the hands of an end user.

Each chip of every wafer you produce should teach you something. It's one major reason Intel is the best chip maker in the world.

It's a part of why Balmer said something like "even if all their operating systems are stolen I want 90% of the market" when talking about China.

And no, Darbes, I didn't forget you. The soon to be replaced ItaniumII -- replaced by ItaniumII( in case you didn't remember ) never had a market share. Even if you got down to tenths of a percent.

And yes, AMD took market share from INTC again in 2002, per Gartner.

So some part of the battle has been won.
