No, not a nail at all, the mrfc (mrfc = mixed reactant fuel cell) fuel cell can also run on NaBH4 as well as Formic acid, and both can be used to make H2 gas in a catalytic reformer.

But the mrfc fuel cell advantage is that it does not need a reformer to make H2 out of the liquid fuels like PLUG/ballard's PEM(Proton Exchange Membrane)-fuel cells need, and that substantially reduces the weight, size, repair costs and complexity of the mrfc fuel cells versus PLUG-PEM fuel cells if PLUG tries to use methanol fed Ballard fuel cells.

The energy density of formic acid and NaBH4 is orders of magnitude higher than H2 gas. Also the mrfc fuel cell reported the highest energy density ever reported for a fuel cell for their fuel cell using NaBH4 just last year in a UK science journal....
