Those old conventional vertical wells ran their course long ago, so no real profits came out as planed. The hype came in the form of many small companies like BYSD made to look like newer high tech service entities capable of squeezing more out of old abandoned wells, and bring back on line. Neat idea, as it brought in a lot of investors who wanted a cheap connection to oil is all.. Like most pinky schemes, it became the frenzy of a newly hatched sector that quickly fizzled. That's why a lot of us are still skeptical with current frenzy bitcoin theme, as it's still basically the same management team. Maybe it's different this time, but you know the saying "the more things change, the more they stay the same"...
