Then there are the consistent prints of 10,000 share trades. This is just market makers trading to each other. No bid deal, I know. But why would market makers do that unless they were trying to keep the price of the stock at a certain range?
Other ways the market makers manipulate the trades is through pre-market trading, post-market trading, and hiding shares on level 2. When the market closes, it only closes to the public. Others can still trade. So the close price we see is not always the close price. That is how we get gap ups and gap downs (when the price opens higher or lower than it closed).
Share hiding is something that market makers love to do. Have you ever noticed that, on level 2, you will see 10,000 shares on the ask at a certain price. Then once those shares are bought, another 100,000 shares will all of a sudden show up? There’s no way that someone immediately just put in a sell order of 100,000 shares. Those shares were already being sold, however, the market makers decided not to show them.
