Borrego Solar Systems Inc. of San Diego came out on top in a competition among contractors to design, build and operate a solar array at Sacramento International Airport.
Some 14 solar companies responded to a request for proposals in the fall from Sacramento County to provide solar power at the airport at no cost to the county, which operates the airport.
A selection committee ranked companies by past projects, financing, terms and experience. County supervisors will pick the winning bidder at its meeting Tuesday.
Founded in 1980, Borrego Solar is one of the oldest photovoltaic firms in the industry. Joining the company in its bid was NRG Energy Inc. of Princeton, N.J.
Sacramento County will pay nothing for the system, which Borrego estimates will cost $15.2 million to install. The companies will get the 30 percent federal renewable energy investment tax credit as well as incentives up to $1.4 million from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.
The county says the system will save the airport an average of $850,000 per year over its 25-year lifespan. The airport now has an annual electric bill of $3.4 million a year.
Ranking after Borrego in the bidding was SunEdison Inc. (NYSE: SUNE) of Belmont, Ecoplexus Solar Solutions Inc. of San Francisco and Cupertino Electric Inc. of San Jose.
Only one local firm, Pacific Power Renwables of Auburn, ranked in the top 10.
The 7-megawatt array could be operating before the end of next year. It would be the largest photovoltaic array in Sacramento County, after the 6-megawatt array completed in 2010 on the Rancho Cordova campus of Aerojet Rocketdyne.
The airport array would be split to two sites on the north and east side of the airport property, including 15 acres by long-term parking and 17 acres between the fire station and Pole Line Road.
