I have wanted to slap phones out of people's hands before. And I have taken them away from people.
In my opinion this is so rude. The message here is, there are other people not here that I would rather be talking to.
In fact, I told the woman I was having lunch with to put away her phone at one point.

Just my opinion, of course.
