It doesn't need to. Once manipulation gets a stock price to a certain level it creates a stain. "If the results are so good, why did the stock price go down?" The reverse was commonly true in the 99-00 era as rising stock prices seemed to be surrogates for good businesses to some.

Their error is assuming the manipulation lasts longer than it does, not that the manipulation didn't exist in the first place. That said, I too find the constant blather about manipulation tiresome. It happens/happened. Get over it.
