doctors currently prescribe narcotics off label now.
just because a drug is long acting, it does not preclude its use for acute pain. similarly short acting drug are used in conjunction with long acting drugs for chronic pain.

If a patient is post-op, a physician can choose to give oxycodone/tylenol (percocet) as a short acting every 4-6 hrs or if they feel stronger pain control is need in the short term, he/she can give oxycontin (long acting oxycodone) every 8-12 hrs and add oxycodone for breakthrough pain.

for chronic pain---many patient use long acting meds for baseline pain control and have short-acting meds for occasional use.

Physcican choice depends on a variety of varaibles.

same can be said for morphine (short acting) and ms-contin (long acting).

both formulations (short and long acting) have a place in treatment of acute and chronic pain
