I think that Randy Lewis is going the right direction with his silkworms, but he has just started using them and likely has not yet achieved homozygosity.

In April 2014, this was stated (Link Here)

By replacing the silkworm silk gene with that of a synthetic spider silk gene, we hope to produce worms that will spin silk as of the same quality of spiders. The Cas9/CRISPR system will be used to edit the genome and insert a synthetic spider silk gene into the host.


He has been playing with his silkworms for less than a year. Considering it took Kim at least that long to work with his Monster Silkworms to get them to produce the spider proteins consistently, i would be suprised if Randy Lewis were further along than he is.
