I wouldt doubt that this process is becoming standard in universities. Using ecoli is very simple for dna modification. It is almost becoming as common as a rat for experiments. After all there are a lot of things besides spider silk protein that ecoli are capable of producing. It is a great tool for teaching DNA minipulation.

It would be interesting to try to find out how many universities are making ecoli based spider protein. I am willing to bet that every major university has someone doing this or something very close to the same.
